Private LLMs for Australian businesses
Cloud AI is excellent product engineering. For some organisations, sending client files, HR notes, or privileged material into a public model is still the wrong default. Private LLMs and hybrid designs exist to restore control — with honest limits.
Not legal or compliance advice
References to the Privacy Act 1988 and Australian Privacy Principles (including APP 8 on cross-border disclosure) are general educational orientation only. Engage qualified counsel and your security team for regulated workloads. We do not provide legal advice via this website.
The Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles are the current law. A draft Privacy Amendment (Personal Data Protection) Bill was discussed in 2026. That draft is not yet law. Watch the Attorney-General’s Department and the OAIC. Automated decision-making transparency (APPs 1.7–1.9, from the Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024) is scheduled to commence 10 December 2026. If your organisation uses a program, including AI, to make or materially assist decisions that significantly affect people, your own privacy policy may need new wording. Read current OAIC guidance. This site is not a compliance program.
Why businesses evaluate private AI
- Data sovereignty: keep inference on infrastructure you control
- Cross-border awareness: reduce unnecessary offshore processing of personal information
- Cost predictability: amortise hardware vs per-seat / per-token surprises at scale
- Offline / regional: operate when SaaS APIs are unavailable
- Auditability: clearer story about where prompts and documents lived
Example use cases by industry
Legal & professional services
Drafting aids over matter summaries you keep on firm infrastructure; privilege-sensitive workflows.
Accounting & finance teams
Internal policy Q&A and document triage without pasting client ledgers into public chats.
Healthcare-adjacent ops
Non-diagnostic admin assistance with strict isolation — clinical decisions stay with clinicians.
Regional operations
Field and branch workflows that cannot depend on always-perfect NBN to a US/EU API.
Architecture patterns (plain English)
- Local workstation: one power user, Ollama/LM Studio, private docs folder.
- Private RAG: embeddings + retrieval over an internal knowledge base; LLM answers with citations.
- Internal API: team UI or apps call a private model server (vLLM-class) on company network.
- Hybrid: sensitive prompts local; low-sensitivity creative tasks still use cloud frontier.
Honest limitations
- Peak reasoning and multimodal quality often trail frontier cloud models
- Ops burden: updates, access control, backups, monitoring
- Hardware and electricity are real budget lines
- Staff still need training so “private” is not undone by shadow SaaS tools
